Like

Spherical heel and support pods that improve stride mimicking natural running gaits, the side is stable and prevent from rolling and ankle.

Dislike

Can be painful when running using the heel as it absorb lots of impact Verdict: Although it’s promoted as a minimalist shoe, the Tevasphere is more properly considered a transitional shoe based on its stack height and 4mm heel to toe drop. Its lightweight and overall comfort provide a nice ride, but long-term durability of the outsole area may be questionable with high mileage use.

Tevasphere trail running shoe boasts a quick-dry synthetic and mesh upper for lightweight, breathable comfort from start to finish. A padded tongue and collar and Mush-infused insole add plush comfort to every step. The TevaSphere outsole, featuring Spider365 rubber for grip, features a spherical heel with support pods for stability that don’t add too much weight

Stability

The shoe was not as fast as some competing shoes in this class, mostly because the heel doesn’t feel very secure. The heel cup is noticeably wide, so it feels a sloshy on off-camber terrain, especially on downhills (when a secure heel is essential). The sloppiness is exacerbated by a total lack of overlays over the midfoot (a significant oversight, in my opinion), which forces you to over-cinch the laces to force the midfoot down and tighten up the upper. That causes top-foot numbness, made worse by a minimally padded (not very comfortable) tongue. Other smaller problems noted: the big forefoot lugs are so soft that they actually lose traction on pointed rocks (but grip very, very nicely in loose rock, snow, sand, firm trail, etc.)

Comfort/ Fit

The shoe has a nicely secure, narrow forefoot feels fast and nimble. It’s a close to the ground shoe that offers great proprioception (feel for the trail) in the forefoot. With a 12mm heel drop, it definitely caters toward heel strikers on flat trails, but the heel doesn’t feel overwhelming for midfoot strikers. The shoe feels smooth while striding. The limited padding in the tongue makes for pressure points when cinching down the laces for a more precision fit.

Traction

The TevaSphere’s spherical heel and support pods give you the natural motion benefits of barefoot, and also the comfort and protection of a traditional shoe.

How we test it?

Approximately 60km gravelly roads, groomed single track, overgrown trail along Macritchie and Bedok Reservoir Park. Terrain included steep inclines/descents, small stream crossings, loosely packed dirt, and moderately muddy conditions. Longest run was 20km.

Final Say

If you plan to do a lot of training on roads or pavements, I’d suggest that you look at other options, or buy a second pair of shoes that are designed solely for harder surfaces in addition to the Tevaspheres. These shoes do have a lot of things going for them – a high tech pod-arch system which gives support without weight, a tough exterior, a high degree of comfort, a superior grip on a multitude of surfaces, and an easy clean finish. If you’re planning on doing a lot of off-road running, then I can wholeheartedly recommend the Tevasphere Speed as a first class multi-terrain shoe and I’m looking forward to many more exciting off-road adventures with my Tevaspheres
